Atari 800XL (Boxed with Polys)

Description

This is now a really nice Atari 800XL, very clean and refurbished, ready for you to get your retro on and play some cool Atari games!

Work carried out:

• RF Shields removed and lightly sanded to remove rust. Shields then treated with silver Rustoleum paint (2 coats) and then clear Rustoleum lacquer (2 coats).  This will inhibit further rusting.
• Keyboard taken out; all keyboard parts cleaned. Membrane cleaned.  Each individual key cleaned, and keyboard reassembled and tested.
• Top case – both parts of the top case separated, and all cleaned with foam cleanse and a toothbrush. Cart port cover cleaned. Reassembled.
• Bottom case cleaned with foam cleanse and a toothbrush.
• Atari motherboard – cleaned with IPA and cartridge port connector removed and replaced with a new cartridge connector. The old connector was flaky due to years of use.
• Capacitors all tested with an ESR meter (checks the internal resistance of the capacitors and the capacitance). Any capacitor that was outside specification was replaced with a new, good quality aluminium capacitor.
• Voltages across the board checked.
• Built a new power supply lead and supplied a new 2 port 4A +5v power supply. Much better than the old Atari power bricks which fail and kill the Atari.

There was a lot of dirt and rust (as can be seen in the pictures).  All of that has been dealt with and the Atari 800XL looks nice!

The cartridge port needed replacing as I couldn’t get any cart to be recognised in the Atari without moving it back and forward in the cart slot.  Changing the cart connector has removed that issue and should work for many years to come.

Using the amazing SysCheck II cart, I have tested the board (memory and ROM) for a couple of hours continuously and it passed every time.

Connected an SIO device (SDrive Max) and loaded games from SD – all works fine.

The Atari will come with an SDRive Max with an SD card with games and demos so that you have a way to load Atari games etc. without the need of a 1050 Disk drive or a tape drive.

There is the usual signs of wear and tear on the box and there is some damage to the polys as shown in the pictures.
